August Activities—Events, Camps and Classes

Last full month of summer so let's pack in as much as we can before it's back to school routines. Here's a rundown of events (one-time and recurring), camps and classes, plus a couple of off-island day trips. You can check out my Hello Summer post for even more fun ideas too.

EVENTS
One-time events, listed chronologically.

  • Duwamish River Festival / August 6th—12-5pm
    Duwamish River People's Park & Shoreline Habitat / 8700 Dallas Ave South
    Annual event just outside WS celebrating the river and community. 
  • Rock Climbing at Camp Long / August 9 and 16
    5200 35th Ave SW
    Signups start at 4:30 pm, two sessions (5-6pm and 6:30-7:30pm). Free, first come/first serve with a limit of 10 slots/session. Save the date for Mountain Fest on September 10th.
  • WS Art Walk / August 11th
    Alaska Junction
  • West Duwamish Greenbelt hike / August 13—10am-12pm
    The Heron's Nest, 4818 Puget Way SW
    Reschedule nature hike exploring tribal uses of native plants. Starts at the Heron's Nest. 
  • Nature Activities@Roxhill Park (Added 8/16/22)

    • Water and Salmon Oh My! / August 17—12:30 -2:30pm 
    • Fun with Water / August 18—12:30 -2:30pm 
    • The Spiders Among US / August 24—12:30 -2:30pm 
  • The Heron’s Nest Monthly Market / August 20—10am-6pm
    The Heron's Nest, 4818 Puget Way SW
    Monthly event featuring local vendors of arts, crafts, food and more. This month's theme is "Of Air & Wind".
  • Seattle Folklorico Festival / August 27th—11am-4pm
    Westcrest Park, 9000 8th Ave SW
  • All-ages Pickleball Clinic / August 27—1-3pm (Added 8/16/22)
  • High Point Community Center, 6920 34th Avenue SW

Alki Point Lighthouse Tours

Enjoy a few stories followed by a garden activity.

Summer storytime with PageAhead (Added 8/17/22)

10:30AM at Alki Beach Bath House
Sensa Play Rentals is hosting another month of free weekly playgroups after
 Fit4MOM West Seattle's Stroller Strides classes. No need to attend SS class first, although your first class is always free. Bring your Little Learners (and their older siblings, too) for BIG FUN!

Fun way to discover what's under the sea all summer. These are the dates when beach naturalist will be at both Lincoln Park and Constellation/Charles Richey Viewpoint (South Alki). You can read my post for more details too.

Free events happening weekly at local parks in West Seattle and all over the city this summer. FB page looks to have the most up-to-date info but a schedule is posted here too. 

Southgate Roller Rink
Summer Skate Class & Session on Wednesdays (7/6-8/17)
Class: 1-2 pm / $17 (includes lesson, skate rental and session following the class)
Skate: 2-4 pm $12 (free skate rental)

SPL summer reading programStarted June 21st

SUP Community Night with Alki Kayak Tours 
Come paddle with AKT on Mondays during the summer from 6-8PM.
Rentals are $25 or you can bring your own. 

Wading pools / Spray park / Pools
